When checking these subsystems keep an eye out for evidence suggesting trouble such as sludge or debris in fuel, missing or damaged air cleaner, score marks on top of piston and cylinder walls, and excessive carbon build up on the intake and exhaust valves. All of these give you valuable insight to your problem.

Your ignition switch is a rotary switch that when turned to one of its 3 positions connects and disconnects certain contact terminals located on its backside. In the “start” position, it connects the Battery, Ignition, Rectifier, Accessory, and Start Terminals.

The wiring also only runs a short distance. I recommend using 6 AWG wire for the high amp starting circuit, and the negative side of the battery to common ground connection. All other wires can be 16 or 14 AWG. The easiest and most effective way to make all of the connections is by using nylon wire crimp connectors. Nylon wire crimp connectors are more durable than ones made from PVC. They are also easier to install than soldered connections. The most common crimp connectors you will use are spade and ring connectors.

These conductors must be yellow throughout the entire circuit, including wiring in the control panel and the external field wiring. • White or natural gray represents a grounded circuit conductor. • White with blue stripe represents a grounded DC current-carrying circuit conductor. International and European standards require you to use light blue for the neutral conductor. • White with yellow stripe represents grounded AC current-carrying control circuit conductors that remain energized when the disconnecting means is in the OFF position. For additional circuits powered from different sources that remain energized when the main disconnecting means is in the OFF position, you must use striping colors other than green, yellow or blue to uniquely identify the grounded conductors.

This refers to making a joint in the middle of a wire or cable. If it is necessary for any reason then use a suitable connector or terminal block. Don’t use a twisted and soldered joint.

The control panel may be isolated but the lamp will require power so that the engineer can see while working on it.

Once you do, you are able to read diagrams quickly, and can often understand a circuit at a glance. The more you work with both line and wiring diagrams, the better you will become in analyzing them.

When constructing junction boxes and pull boxes, you must be careful to exclude materials such as dust, flyings, oil and coolant. After you complete all wiring operations, you must seal all unused knockouts or openings.
